Braille Staircase Handrail to navigate the visually impaired safely in stairs

Ascending or descending stairs safely is possibly one of the major problems for the visually impaired. Addressing the issue, a bunch of designers, including Zhou Wenqiang, Bao Haimo, Jin Zhixun, Li Meiyan and Li Xinyi, has come up with an innovative staircase called the “Braille Staircase Handrail” that as the name suggests integrates Braille handrail to navigate the visually impaired safely through the stairs.

Integrating Braille information on the top of a common staircase handrail to assist the visually impaired, the creative staircase not only gives the information regarding different floors and tenants (with brown Braille) but also alerts the user about the last three stairs (with green Braille). Presenting the info of the floor on the right handrail while ascending as well as descending to avoid any confusion, the special handrail changes the brown Braille to alter changes in tenancy of the building.
