Movies have often pioneered new technology and new technological advances have made movies more exciting. The latest advances in devices are set to change the nature of movie making forever. Dual camera VR, sentient drones, 3D printing, and many other things are there which are going to make movies an unreal experience altogether, more than ever. Here’s a list of some innovations which is going to change the movie industry as well as home movie making:
Sentient drones
Autonomous drones are nothing compared to what’s around the corner. Sentient drones, which would have inbuilt knowledge about many filmmaking techniques, will take over. Angles, shots, screen position etc with advanced technology would lead to developing drone cinematographers.
Algorithmic editing
This is perhaps the most interesting innovation of them all. MIT researchers are in the process of developing algorithmic editing software, which might take the place of human video editing and film jobs. Or even if it doesn’t replace humans, it will at least make editing miles easier. Automatic labeling, idiom appliance, and facial recognition are some of the thrilling innovations of the software.
4K and 3D
VR or virtual reality is gradually making inroads into the movie industry too. The LucidCam is being touted as the only 4K and 3D virtual reality live production camera. Yi Halo, a camera developed by Yi technology supported by Google, is a 16 pt 4K, 3D camera, which is extremely expensive and impressive.
3D printing
3D printing will revolutionize the production design aspect of filming. As conceptual artists design using CAD and CGI, which are both computer-aided software, now imaginative and innovative designs can be easily produced with the help of 3D printing. Many big production houses are using 3D printing technology already, as it is flexible and efficient. Night vision glasses used in some movies and even a made to scale tank exterior was printed out using 3D. 3D printing has already become a part of a production designer’s design tools.
Dual camera VR
The developers of this project believe that binocular 360 views and recording is the future of VR. That is how we see the world, and that is how a camera should capture images.
Drone goggles
Drone goggles which look most futuristic, are already available now. These goggles can fly drones as well as adjust the camera using just the head movement. This is possible due to the gyroscope and embedded accelerator. We might have seen a lot of actors wearing these futuristic goggles, especially in sci-fi movies!
Smartphone camera movies
Smartphone and iPhone movies are already being made, in fact, entire movies have been filmed using these advanced phones. You too can make feature-length movies on your phone, which may do away with an expensive camera and light equipment in the future.
Depth sensors
Depth sensing cameras visualize and capture the surroundings in wireframe forms. This makes 3D motion capturing cheaper than what it is now. The Depth Kit from Microsoft is synched with the camera and a 3D sculpture is obtained simultaneously which matches with the movie’s action and characters.
The latest advances in technology are making revolutionary changes in movie making. New mediums and effects are being explored and added to make movies an out of the world experience.
