AndyVision robot helps shoppers make right choices

It’s usually frustrating to spend hours at supermarket groping for things you want and still, not finding them. A robot called AndyVision might help you out of the quandary. Developed by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University’s Intel Science and Technology Center in Embedded Computing, the humanoid keeps check on each item in the shop and notifies supermarket employees about low stock or misplaced stuff. S0 next time, when you visit a supermarket, you may see one of these hoodie-wearing robots scanning the shelves to keep things in order, and ultimately helping you.

The bot relies on a Kinect sensor, machine-learning algorithms, 2D/3D images of products and shop’s floor plan to offer prompt updates on misplaced or out of stock stuff. It projects all info on a touch-screen and staff’s iPads. The perfectly agile robot utilizes proximity sensors to avoid impact with things at the supermarket.

Priya Narsimhan, the team leader at CMU that the robot was developed after going through customers’ reviews and assessing their needs. AndyVision makes sure that each item is placed perfectly and customers’ won’t have to fumble about for things at retail stores.
